I’ve been a big fan of Big Red & Shiny for a long time, so I was very pleased to meet Anulfo back in March. I’m honored he asked me to contribute to Inside Out. It seems like an unusual time (and, hopefully, a rich one) for me to be writing about my process. As Anulfo said, in the middle of my residency on BR&S, I will be picking up and moving across the country to start my MFA degree at San Francisco Art Institute. I’ve also been in the middle of…

The role of language in visual art is frequently misunderstood. There are artists who do not see writing in their practice going much farther than their artist statement, a necessary evil. Likewise there are gallerists, critics, and historians who see writing as something outside the artist’s purview. By and large such extreme opinions are regarded as outdated today, particularly in an academic city like Boston. Nonetheless, the effects of long-held prejudices and traditional divisions between the academic and the practical linger within the art world. But interaction with words and language is…

Our Daily Red is pleased to continue our artist-in-residence series titled Inside Out. Every month, a new guest artist will have access to the platform to publish images and jot down thoughts about inspiration, obsession, creative failures and insights. Unlike an ‘Open Studio’ format which is predicated on potential sales, BR&S wants to provide the artist-in-residence with an outlet to place their practice in a more public realm, offering an expanded look at the creative process and placing emphasis on the time ideas and works take to mature. It is not…

Ryan creates pieces using a range of methods, often featuring the rainbow spectrum in some way in each piece. His work aims to raise questions not only about perceptions of sexuality in society, but also identities and labels assumed and applied on a larger scale. Listen as Ryan explains how he hopes to do this with his works that range…
