By BIG RED NEWS EDITOR One of the things we want to do with Big RED & Shiny is connect artists with each other, and with organizations and conversations that can help them make a difference. Our links section is one area where we can make this happen, and as our projects evolve, so does our vision of what we can provide. So we are happy to announce a revision to our Links section. Information is now divided into three categories, and you can add your own link with a few clicks.…

By STEVE AISHMAN “You see, visiting art exhibitions is a terrible act of violence that we perpetrate on ourselves.” – Trotsky “He has helped to preserve, protect, and present the cultural and artistic heritage of our world.” – President George W. Bush while presenting the National Medal of Arts to Philippe de Montebello for 30 years as director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is going to make me sound like a Marxist. Not the “let’s re-educate everyone and return to Year Zero” kind of Marxist, but the “maybe we should…

By CHARLES GIULIANO It is tough for Arlette Kayafas to get around. She has been trying to find the time in a busy schedule to have an operation on her knees that will take four months of rehabilitation. So Arlette warned me that she is a bit slow. Turns out I’m no rabbit either. Accordingly we found our pace and world view in perfect synch recently when I picked her up in front of the South End gallery and drove to the garage under the New England School of Art & Design.…

By AMANDA SCHMITT Feminist art is a heavily argued topic in countless critiques and conversations around the art community – How do we distinguish between feminist art, art made by women, art about women, and art with a feminine quality. Why is it that most art made by women, with a feminine quality, is labeled feminist? A piece of art made by a man can be feminine (i.e., pink, frilly, sewed, crocheted), but is it possible for a man to create a feminist piece of art? This summer the Brooklyn Museum takes…

By ANAIS DALY At a new gallery on Melcher Street, Gallery Lamontagne (named after its owner, Russell Lamontagne), showcases the work of three artists who hail from various parts of the country in an exhibition titled “Regional Highlights”.
