Our next guest on the Studio Sessions podcast series is Andrea Evans. Andrea Evans is a 2009 MFA graduate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and earned a BFA in painting from Arizona State University in 2004. Much of her work involves wearing impractical articles of clothing that she creates, such as a pair of socks that are joined together at the toes, or a two-person balaclava that forces the wearer to see nothing but the face of the other person wearing the garment. She uses these…

“Poïesis is etymologically derived from the ancient Greek term ποιέω, which means “to make”. This word, the root of our modern “poetry”, was first a verb, an action that transforms and continues the world. Neither technical production nor creation in the romantic sense, poietic work reconciles thought with matter and time, and man with the world.” (Wikipedia) This is the first in a regular series of poems on the topic of art. Kurt Eidsvig’s column, Poïesis, which appeared in Volume 1 of Big Red & Shiny, brings a poetic twist to our…

Andrea Fraser suddenly started shaking. From my seat at the very back of the theater, I couldn’t quite tell: was she crying? Sobbing, even? “Don’t cry Andrea,” I murmured. Empathy coursed through me: I was reaching out to her, I wanted to hold her, calm her, and felt suddenly irritated at the person who had prompted this unexpected reaction. Why did they have to ‘go there’? “Oh, you really want to go there?” had been her response before she began shaking. I recalled a beautiful text Fraser once wrote about the effect…

I remember why I wrote that short paper on Maya Lin for my Introduction to Architecture course in college. I wrote it because I admired Lin’s resiliency during the moments leading up to and after the completion of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. I was also interested in Maya Lin’s commitment to the environment and how it manifested itself in her work as an architect and artist. In a much anticipated talk part of the Lowell Lecture Series: Common Ground and Building Boston at the Boston Public Library on…

A field guide to recent (and some ongoing as noted) art exhibitions and events in the greater Connecticut River region. Traveling downstream from north to south: Marlboro, VT: Marlboro College, Drury Gallery, Jen Morris: Enunciate Jen Morris Tucked away in the foothills of the Green Mountains, Marlboro College puts the “Liberal” in Liberal Arts. To me, it has always seemed a place for students to either find themselves or perhaps more likely to lose themselves in the wilderness of a self-designed academic landscape. It is fitting then, to start this “field guide”…

What does a tree look like? A child defines it like a lollipop, a green mass perched on top of a sturdy trunk. As we grow older we acknowledge the sinewy link between that trunk and its branches that support the leaves. Overwhelmed by the intricate detail of those connections, I find that when I draw a tree I often forget the leaves completely. They seem to be a superfluous externality, to be added on later in watercolor. But this detail-oriented technique leaves out the tree’s most tree-like qualities — the cool…
