Hello, and welcome to the next installment of Studio Sessions with Boston-area artist Garett Yahn.
Garett Yahn is a 2011 MFA graduate from the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and earned a combined undergraduate degree in fine art and art education from Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 2005. Garett uses performance and art interventions to examine relationships among individuals within a community, and between himself and his family. His work often utilizes a very simple device, such as shaving, or receiving a haircut, or buying a pair of shoes, but frames the experience in a way that inspires thought and introspection on the activity at hand.
Listen as Garett discusses a wide variety of his projects and how he creates art out of seemingly everyday activities.
- Garett’s “Pink Deck” piece in which he painted the rear deck of an empty house awaiting demolition.
- An image from Garett’s thesis work in which he receives a haircut from his mother, who works as a hairdresser.
- In “Work History”, Garett combines the activities of shaving and listening to his father describe his employment history over the phone.
- An interactive piece, “Entertainment Center” invited prospective graduate students at SMFA to congregate and play video games during their downtime between interviews.
