Capture, Map, and Explore the World of Vintage Typography

0
Do you like typography, architecture and vintage signs? Do you find yourself wishing there was a way to document and archive unique type and signage from all over the world?

There’s an app for that and it’s called Fontly.

Fontly is an iPhone and web based app that allows users to capture, map, and explore the world of vintage typography that surrounds them. As a project that started in Boston by entrepreneur and designer Brendan Ciecko, we couldn’t pass this up. Our readers passionate about the typography may find this app useful, if it’s not to document unique typography they see, then for inspiration.

The app just launched in August of 2012, so there is potential for growth and improvement. For example, you can’t upload images from your camera's photo library or computer just yet. In the web version of this app, rather than listing all the records uploaded by users, one has to zoom in and out of a Google map to see the entries. This could be fast or very slow depending on your internet connection (we understand it's 2012, but time is of the essence).

So far in Boston, 332 records have been submitted. What are you waiting for? Get out there and explore the world of typography that surrounds you.
