EXIT 1 ↗ The entire history of America is based on rediscovering what has already been found. Picture yourself, late for work, searching for your car keys and eyeglasses only to hear the Hyundai exhaling exhaust fumes out back in the garage. A pair of bifocals rest on top of your hair. Now print this day inside a history book. EXIT 2 ↗ The arc of American art doesn’t start until Eisenhower returns from Germany horrified at our lack of preparation. He dreams of Nazi efficiencies, supplies drawn from border to border,…
Last week, I posted a sneak peek of some of my sketchbooks, which I looked through for the first time (in too long) while packing up my studio for a cross country move. It’s amazing what you stumble across when you look through old sketchbooks. This week, I decided to post a few more images from my sketchbooks.
Welcome to Studio Sessions with our guest this episode, Caitlin Masley. Caitlin earned a BFA from West Virginia University, an MFA from the University of Arizona, and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Design and Urban ecologies from Parsons in New York City. In her work, Caitlin creates structures that express both the geometric and organic qualities of cities. Once executed as stand-alone sculptures, her works have grown to become large-scale installations, along with other two-dimensional mixed media and digital pieces. “Poïesis is etymologically derived from the ancient Greek term ποιέω, which means “to make”. This word, the root of our modern “poetry”, was first a verb, an action that transforms and continues the world. Neither technical production nor creation in the romantic sense, poietic work reconciles thought with matter and time, and man with the world.” (Wikipedia) Echoes with Doors Closing —after Jasper Johns’ Target With Plaster Casts, 1955 We miss targets, not people. People we keep inside, appropriate, love in small boxes, use molds of Frank O’Hara’s poems to explain…

One of the many joys in New England living is the palpable sense of history in all of the region’s best urban spaces. The inconveniences of slender alleyways and tightly packed neighborhoods are forgiven because these features, seemingly anachronistic to generations of suburbanites, are what make cities lively and interesting. Punctuating the signature density of urban development are the great parks, the public parlors of cities, which have for generations been where neighbors come together to play, to talk, and even to protest. Truly great urban parks give relief from the sometimes-cramped…
There is one really nice thing about moving: as you pack your things, you get a thorough look at everything you own. You unearth things you haven’t seen in months or years, and stumble across items you thought were lost a long time ago. With each little discovery, a spark of a story bursts into your head as you remember how you got the item in the first place, or the last time you used it. Moving from Boston to San Francisco is easily the farthest, biggest move I’ve ever done. So…
