On Monday night, Emerson College’s 550 seat auditorium at the beautifully restored Paramount Theatre was packed—artists, arts administrators, advocates, critics and many other professionals working in the creative industries gathered—as the city witnessed its first-ever mayoral forum on the arts. “It’s about time!” clamored forum moderator Joyce Kulhawik during her opening remarks at MassCreative’s Create the Vote forum on arts, culture and creativity. It comes as no surprise that the winner of the night was MassCreative, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that “empowers creative organizations and the public with a powerful voice that…
An enclave is the term for an isolated land or group which is wholly surrounded by another and thus inaccessible without passing through foreign territory. I’ve come to Venice Biennale to see the best of what the international art scene has to offer, and I’m not disappointed. After days of walking around Venice to see as many of the 88 countries and 47 collateral exhibits as humanly possible, by the last day my feet are just band-aids. However, I’ve been seeing intriguing posters from an exhibit my map tells me is not…

You can start on the waterfront for the ICA Boston’s Performathon featuring voguing competitions, beatboxing performances, and sets by DJ Knife. While there, be sure to check out exhibitions Steve Locke: there’s no one left to blame and Mary Reid Kelley. The event goes from 5-10pm. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston also hosts its MFA First Friday event tonight from 6:00-9:30pm, featuring DJ Denise LaCarubba. Tickets available online through their website or in person at the museum. Both…

Previous contributing artists have included Charles Sandison, Susan Philipsz, and Nick Cave. Placing contemporary works within the historic collection of the Peabody Essex Museum creates a dynamic relationship between past and present. Curatorial endeavors such…
What were you doing last September 4th? We BR&S editors were rolling out our relaunched blog and journal after a two year hiatus. 365 days later, it’s clear that you did miss us while we were gone. With your love, we’ve produced a year of exceptional art writing and critical discussions, all with a Boston accent. Because we had so much fun meeting and dancing with all of you who backed our relaunch last year, we are thrilled to announce the second annual BIG RED SHINDIG, in celebration of our first year…

Our Daily Red is pleased to continue our artist-in-residence series titled Inside Out. Every month, a new guest artist will have access to the platform to publish images and jot down thoughts about inspiration, obsession, creative failures and insights. Unlike an ‘Open Studio’ format which is predicated on potential sales, BR&S wants to provide the artist-in-residence with an outlet to place their practice in a more public realm, offering an expanded look at the creative process and placing emphasis on the time ideas and works take to mature. It is not expected…
