The four artists are inaugurating their collaborative space at 59 Wareham Street this coming Saturday with an exhibition titled S01E01 which juxtaposes works by Dennis Congdon, Oliver Herring, and Elizabeth Riley. I stopped in while they were installing the show to discuss their plans for kijidome. Stephanie Cardon We can start with the questions that everyone is asking, because I’m sure, as you’re announcing the opening of kijidome, people are responding with similar questions. Let’s get those…

American cities are having a moment, and Boston is no exception. Throughout the nation, cities are seeking to reinvent themselves (especially in the context of post-industrial soul-searching), and to orient themselves within an economy that is increasingly based on ideas, rather than on physical infrastructure. Unlike many other cities, Boston has a history as a “hub;” a unique combination of factors make it a natural site of new ideas, from its huge student population to its early adoption of the tech industry. Thanks to the branding of the city as an “innovation…

It comes as no surprise that a photograph’s value is about access. While some art has the luxury of being unique as an object, a photograph is only as unique as what it represents. It’s a window into a moment or expression to which the audience has limited access. It’s the sneaky stuff: the behind-the-scenes, the front lines, the temporal, and the lives of others. In She Who Tells a Story, currently on view through January 12 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, curator Kristen Gresh has selected established international photographers…

Louis Kahn, Class of 1945 Library, 1971. Photo: @clintbaclawski Leave the classroom behind and instead let the tiny town of Exeter, New Hampshire guide you through 300 years of exhilarating American architecture. Begin your walking tour with the magnificent Class of 1945 Library on the august grounds of Phillips Exeter Academy. Designed by modern master Louis Kahn, and completed in 1971, little about the building’s exterior betrays the awe that awaits you once inside. With a soaring, central atrium, the building’s spare elegance is a spiritual exercise in volume, mass and void.…

It’s hard to believe, but Amy Sillman: one lump or two, opening today at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, is Sillman’s first museum survey show. Comprising over 90 of Sillman’s paintings, drawings, ‘zines and films, one lump or two resists any compartmentalization of her work into period or time. Instead, the show demonstrates Sillman’s engagement with formal and expressionistic concerns as they have persisted over the last twenty-five years, evolving as visual ideations more so than a singular aesthetic. Perhaps Sillman’s resistance to singularity has dissuaded curators from mounting large-scale retrospectives. Whatever…
