By BIG RED NEWS EDITOR This past week, the ICA announced that the opening of the new new South Boston waterfront building will be delayed.The $51 million facility, under construction since 2004, slated to open this upcoming September 17th, will postpone its opening for later in the fall, citing construction delays. The Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed building is located in Boston’s Fan Pier and will replace the 955 Boylston St. building – the ICA’s residence since 1978. By BIG RED NEWS EDITOR After weeks of legislation, vetoes, and overrides, the Massachusetts legislation voted to increase the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s budget by $2.45 million, bringing the fiscal year budget for 2007 to just more then $12 million. This increase is also tied in with a separate initiative to the Cultural Facilities Fund, which will help develop, protect, and upkeep of arts related structures and by stimulating cultural economies throughout the state, particularly in smaller communities. By BIG RED NEWS EDITOR Alternate Currents founders Scott Ciopolla and Tom Ciopolla have announced the closing Space 200. Alternate Currents was founded in 2004, teaming up with curator James Manning to develop a shows of local independent and ermging artists. The space was developed two years ago in agreement with Sullivan Properties as a way to utilize a vacant storefront area located at 200 State St. in Boston near Faneuil Hall. Public Art Review, a widely respected journal devoted to public art, has noted MIT’s public art collection as one of the best campus collections, slotting into the top ten for their Art on Campus, Spring/Summer 2006 Issue. Currently, the MIT grounds host approximately 50 artworks, excluding the rotating permanent collection of over 1,500 pieces throughout the campus in offices and hallways. By BIG RED NEWS EDITOR In mid-July, The Boston Globe reported that Boston’s NPR affiliate WBUR was laying off their long-time arts critic Bill Marx. They also reported that the art criticism section of their website would also be phased out, while keeping the calendar. The Globe quoted Sam Fleming, WBUR’s managing director of news and programming: “We will focus more on news and issues related to arts, as opposed to all criticism,” he said.
