THERE ARE NO NEW IDEAS. PART 3 By Christian Holland Part 3 of a 3-Part Series. Click here for Part 1 and here for part 2. Some philosophers, scientists and artists, such as Micah Malone, suggest that there are going to be New Ideas in spite of the philosophical evidence that suggests the contrary: New ways of looking at things, New modes by which to do things, and New combinations of old ideas. Malone said this regarding the iPod in our Facebook discussion about the New: While there were already several Mp3 players…

By James A. Nadeau As February dawns it seems like a good time to take a look back at the first month of the year. January brought many surprises and unfortunately not all of them were good. The good stuff entailed an administrative change in our country’s leadership, which might actually mean more money for the arts. So far the Obama administration has dedicated $50 million to the National Endowment for the Arts, 40% of which is to be distributed through state and regional arts agencies. We’ll see if this makes it through…

BACKLASH TO BRANDEIS CLOSING THE ROSE By Matthew Nash & Micah J. Malone On Monday, January 26th, The Boston Globe’s Geoff Edgers broke the story that Brandeis University was planning to close down the Rose Art Museum and sell off the entire collection of 6000 works, including pieces by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Nam June Paik. The collection’s reported value is about $350 million. The move was a response to the growing financial crisis that is impacting Brandeis (and many other institutions) and was seen by critics as an ill-considered means to…

PLATFORM2: MANIFESTO!SLAM By Matthew Nash The banner said “Get on the bus” so we did, sixteen participants in the MANIFESTO!SLAM created by the social activist collaborative Platform2. It was a cold evening but everyone was jubilant, that morning having witnessed the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th President of these United States. The MANIFESTO!SLAM was timed to deliver these manifestos, many many manifestos, to the new president and the renewed country on the day of the most significant transfer of power in many lifetimes. The bus was green, fueled with bio-diesel. As it…

This morning The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston announced that Bill Arning has been named as their new director. Arning has been the curator at the List Visual Art Center at MIT, and while we are very happy that Arning will be bringing his insight and intellect to a great contemporary museum, it is also a loss for Boston. Arning has been a vocal supporter of the arts here in New England, curating a number of impressive exhibitions for the List, serving on many boards for non-profits, writing and promoting art in a…

THE FUTURE: BOSTON LACKS ALTERNATIVE SPACES? By Greg Cook A month back, Matt Nash of Big Red & Shiny wrote an essay lamenting that in Boston the “alternative gallery scene is non-existent.”It struck a chord with thinking I’ve been doing about what we as a community can do to incubate a more lively local art scene. Much of the exciting stuff that happens in art happens because people felt left out or got fed up with the existing system and insisted on starting their own thing. Art people are attracted to new things,…
