CHUNKY MOVE @ THE ICA By Chelsey Philpot In the question and answer session that followed the Australian-based dance troupe Chunky Move’s performance at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), artistic director Gideon Obarzanek further charmed an admiring audience. He spoke about yoga, his background, and the artistic process behind his choreography. Obarzanek, a ruggedly good-looking man who appears young enough to still be a student at the Australian Ballet School, explained that he shies away from style. His goal, according to the company Web site, is “to redefine what is or…
ART AS FASHION, PART ONE By Judy Kermin Blotnick Fashion and art have frequently run on parallel tracks historically (and sometimes hysterically.) Art has been used to cloak in grandeur what is otherwise a commercial enterprise and money made in the rag trade has probably supported more artists than funding from popes and monarchs. Art elevates fashion and fashion pays for art. And like a Cornelia Parker installation, they both pull a lot of fractured old silver on a fish line behind them. Sit back, ‘cause here comes a little history. By…
By Steve Aishman A collection of art news from around the globe over the past few years: 1. In 2008, Paul McCarthy’s “Complex Shit”, a giant inflatable dog turd, broke free, destroyed some power lines, and then crashed into a children’s home in Switzerland. 2. In January of 2009, a tattoo artist found a way to tattoo the white part of your eyes. State senators in Oklahoma have already pre-emptively banned the practice. 3. Since I’m writing about eyeballs, artist Xiang Chen paints by holding the brush with his eyeball. 4. In July…
A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR By Micah J. Malone A casual overview of our current issue strikes me as something of an anomaly. While at times we have focused volumes, we generally publish precisely what is striking the fancy of our writers at the time of publication. Which is only to say that our writers are independent and while one may be at a basement show of post grad students, another may be looking at a University/Museum exhibition. I’d like to say we plan this diversity, but mostly, all we need to accomplish…
“THE WHITE CUBE” By Thomas Marquet #46: When the framing business is in a recession, it’s the jokes about framing that really suffer. Thomas Marquet is a cartoonist, sculptor, and critic, based in Brooklyn, New York, which is an admittedly unoriginal place to be pursuing any of these things. Get The White Cube every day at Tom’s blog.
MARK MORRIS @ CUTLER MAJESTIC By Chelsey Philpot Mark Morris dancers make it look so easy. From the flick of a wrist to the simultaneous jumps and right down to the curling and uncurling of toes, the Mark Morris Dance Group is defined by precision. It is easy to imagine the company training for performances as soldiers train in boot camp: the dancers all lined up in a row, Morris pacing before them, barking out the steps and blowing a whistle should a dancer’s posture be anything less than ninety degrees from…
