And if your life is as crazy as mine is in terms of commitments you will understand that finding the time to sit and reflect is pretty impossible. So forgive me if this article rambles and stumbles from concept to concept. I’m hoping that events and ideas and memories become clearer as I write.…

By STEVE AISHMAN Somewhere along the way, rules got a bad name. People began to associate rules with authority and oppression of freedom. Rules are now seen as antiquated obstacles to individualism and progress. Artists in particular decided that following any rules meant total subordination of personal liberties to potentially dangerous social institutions. Artists now fear that if any rules are allowed to even be uttered without immediately being contradicted, that there will be a return to social domination like the infamous degenerate art exhibition of 1937 or Lenin’s Izo-Narkompros where totalitarian…

By JAMES A. NADEAU I have spent the last two issues discussing the work that I viewed in Beijing, so I figured it was time to talk a little bit about my trip to Seoul. A lot of the work in galleries the Korean capital was fairly traditional – paintings, sculpture, fabric – but there were a couple of instances of new media work. The Arko Art Center, a space dedicated to contemporary Korean art, was one of my first stops after recovering from jetlag. It was a little hard to find…
