Greetings BR&S! I’m J.R. Uretsky and in the studio today I am working on a new segment of my performance series titled, Women I’ve Known, Biblically. I have been thinking about sentimental artworks and found this great article by Nada Gatalo. I see sentiment as a tool, and I want my performances and videos to act as situations that evoke sentimental feelings while simultaneously being the “…consequence of its [the works] sentimentality.” Gatalo explains, “The moral critique of sentimentality is most extensively developed by David Pugmire, who claims that sentimentality is immoral…
https://vimeo.com/58230343 Our Daily Red is pleased to continue our artist-in-residence series titled Inside Out. Every month, a new guest artist will have access to the platform to publish images and jot down thoughts about inspiration, obsession, creative failures and insights. Unlike an ‘Open Studio’ format which is predicated on potential sales, BR&S wants to provide the artist-in-residence with an outlet to place their practice in a more public realm, offering an expanded look at the creative process and placing emphasis on the time ideas and works take to mature. It is…
The CMCA, Rockport’s Center for Maine Contemporary Art, is doing something right. Its Biennial, which closes next Wednesday after a 2 month run, showcases the work of 17 artists who live and work, at least part-time, in the State of Maine. At 60, the Center seems to have taken a swig from the fountain of youth. When it comes to art, Rockport, a charming small town on the Midcoast, has to contend with the same stereotypes and preconceptions as many a New England destination. Absent from the white post-and-beam structure were the…

While driving home from my family’s house on Black Friday I was surprised to see an open sign in front of the Boston Cyberarts Gallery. I had missed the opening event for their new show and had been meaning to stop by but hadn’t yet found time when our schedules overlapped. Still coming down my calorie-high the day before, I wasn’t sure that I felt completely prepared to spend time with the work and engage with it in the way that I needed. Strangely, I found that I was unprepared, though for…
When someone you just met does something nice for you and you are shocked, it makes you reexamine the kind of jerks you usually hang around with. And that sentence is the roundabout way I picked to tell you that I am reporting from the west coast of Ireland. I’m here on a month long residency at the Burren College of Art, and that line about reexamining things refers to how I got here. I applied for a one-year teaching fellowship. I wasn’t selected, but I got an email from the dean…
