2012 Rappaport Prize: Suara Welitoff

Big Red & Shiny would like to congratulate Suara Welitoff on the news that she has been awarded this year's Rappaport Prize by the deCordova! The Rappaport Prize is awarded annually to a mid-career contemporary artist with ties to New England. Welitoff's work is, in the words of the deCordova, "lyrical and meditative videos that elevate the everyday to the poetic."

Working mostly in video and photographic installations, she was named the 2002 Maud Morgan recipient, received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in 2009, and she has exhibited or been collected by the Rose Kennedy Greenway; at the MFA, Boston; Worcester Art Museum; the List Visual Arts Center, MIT; the ICA, Boston; NGBK, Berlin; Il Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina, Florence, and others. She shows with Barbara Krakow Gallery, Boston and Galerie Anita Beckers, Frankfurt. You can see her work in On Sincerity at BU's 808 Gallery, October 26- December 16.

In 2006 Christian Holland reviewed her solo show A Million Sunsets at Allston Skirt Gallery. Her work since 2006 has continued to explore the aesthetic limits of motion pictures and photography. Blurring, slowing, and colorizing found footage to increase the mystery and softening the relationship that film shares with truth. Her work's formal aspects create an heightened awareness in the viewer, while delaying the viewer's ability to establish a distinct response to it. Her work is eloquent and understated-- this award is well deserved.
