The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Massachusetts, has announced the launch of a new program. The Artists Professional Toolbox (APT) is designed to empower emerging and practicing artists to succeed in the business aspects of being a professional artist. Download the informational brochure and application form with more information; or find more information on their website by clicking on the Toolbox link. In short, the program is divided into three portions: career planning, marketing, and financial/legal issues. The VLA developed the curriculum in response to surveys of practicing artists, which were designed to determine in what areas artists need the most help. In addition to classroom/workshop sessions, the artists will work with a professional career coach and in peer advisory groups to form a community of fellows during and after the program. Also, the program will feature a portfolio review with gallery owners to let artists test out and get feedback on their marketing, networking and presentation networking strategies. The course begins with a two-day retreat in November 2005 and continues with classroom, workshop and peer sessions through May 2006.
