Museum of Fine Arts, Boston appoints Jen Mergel as Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art

0

So the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has finally replaced Beal Family Senior Curator Cheryl Brutvan after a year of searching. And it seems that their long, international search for a major curator lead them right to Boston's ICA. It seems like an odd choice but a safe one. She certainly has the local connections but it her resume seems awfully...um...short. There are no exhibitions earlier than 2007 listed in the MFA's press release.

The MFA is apparently investing in curatorial staff with room to grow. This is following in the footsteps of the promotion of Carter Long as the curator of the film program. A person with an equally brief CV. This can either be a very smart move that energizes the MFA or it can lead to simplistic and immature programming. Only time will tell.

So, congratulations to Ms. Mergel. I am curious to see what she does in this role. I did like the exhibition Acting Out: Social Experiments in Video. It wasn't a spectacular show but it was intriguing.
