Rhonda Smith Walking on Rock and Water Hampden Gallery U. Mass Amherst
October 15 @ 2:00 pm - November 3 @ 6:00 pm
Rock and water provide a moving meditation. Any traverse is supported by solidity and gravity, buoyancy and fluidity. Most likely they will survive human destruction. They have an ancient relationship however odd the pairing: one recording the passage of time, the other eschewing it; one stalwart, the other mercurial. The two elements figure in Rhonda Smith 3D map-like paintings as an antidote to the flattened un-ornamented representation of them on the GPS. The images are in the spirit of Chinese scholars' rocks, inviting the viewer to take a journey on their surfaces.
