LUSCIOUS: Elynn Kröger and Sterling Mulbury

November 16 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Simmons College presents Luscious, paintings by Elynn Kröger and Sterling Mulbry from November 14-December 14 at the Trustman Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor, Main College Building, 300 The Fenway in Boston. A reception will be held on Thursday, November 16 from 5-7 P.M. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The squishy deliciousness of paint is on view in Luscious. Kröger’s abstracted works are inspired by nature; she layers and builds her images. Mulbry’s figurative works are seemingly carved in paint; they have a certitude about them even when they are surreally fanciful. Both artists are colorists and explore patterns.

Elynn Kröger has her studio in Gloucester, and studied at Mass College of Art and Design, as well as receiving a MA at Bridgewater State.  Her acrylic works undulate in form and texture. Her scale of works is varied but the abandon with which she utilizes the paint is consistent in small or large works. Don’t Go Back to Sleep softly zigs and zags its way down the support. The work is organized in roughly horizontal sections, each implying a switch in our perspective. Are we looking at sea and sky? The colors are pinks and violets with touches of yellow and greens. At the forefront a cascade of translucent drips occupies the entire width.

Sterling Mulbry has studios both in Florida and Fort Point Channel, Boston. Her saturated paintings evoke a lazy sundrenched feeling. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and won a Fifth Year Traveling Scholarship. Many of her works delight in pattern making. Clean Sheets invites us to walk through the picket fence at the foreground, under the madly whipping sheets and to the tranquil sea. The red underpainting creates a counterpoint to the green bushes and chalky pastel green sky. The sensuous curves of the sheets define the work, and the upright barricade of the fence demarks our passage.

These two artists revel in paint’s materiality and lush color. Their paintings heighten our senses, and our ability to imagine the world.

Our Music in the Gallery series continues on Wednesday, November 29 from 12:30-1:45 p.m. with a concert by Cold Chocolate, an Americana band that fuses bluegrass, folk and rock.

Trustman Gallery hours are 10 AM- 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The gallery is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible. For more information, contact Marcia Lomedico at 617-521-2268, or visit the Trustman Art Gallery website at www.simmons.edu/trustman and visit us on Facebook.
