Job Description: Managing Editor
5–10 hrs/week

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Editor's role is to be an organized leader who keeps the big picture in mind. The Managing Editor helps to refine Big Red & Shiny’s mission and ensures the organization stays true to its vision by leading projects, communicating, delegating, and assisting editors when needed. Editorially, the Managing Editor works with staff and contributors to create content that meets organizational standards, keeps an editorial schedule to provide content that is delivered on time and supervises the uploading and formatting of content onto CMS (WordPress) with technical proficiency and accuracy. This position also oversees the dissemination of content on social media platforms.

The Managing Editor works with BR&S staff and the Board to craft vision and strategies for the future. They keep Board members informed of BR&S's ongoing editorial activities via the Board President, providing them with information to help the Board make sound decisions. The Managing Editor has a responsibility to strengthen BR&S's ability to assess its own work, community outreach, and network building in order to develop strong partnerships and lasting relevance in the community.
This position is volunteer. Depending on yearly budgets, an honorarium may be allotted.

Editorial-related duties include:

  • Clarifying practices and roles among staff and maintaining related digital documentation
  • Calling Editorial Meetings and drafting the meeting agenda
  • Suggesting new voices and articles for publication, and staying in touch with contributors as needed to ensure lasting and frequent content
  • Supervising final copyediting/formatting/publishing of articles and other webpage content
  • Managing customer relations and payments, digital management of advertising
  • Managing payments for all BR&S contributors and related documentation
  • Managing Big Red & Shiny, Inc.’s financial records and preparing those records for annual filing with the assistance of the Board and other professionals
  • Helping develop projects with a realistic financial framework
  • Supervising the preparation of an annual budget

Other general duties as needed include (based on the current needs of BR&S/the candidate’s interest):

  • Managing the Newsletter service
  • Writing reviews and articles
  • Assisting with Social Media outreach
  • Working with the Board and editorial staff on special projects and events
  • Attending Board meetings and regularly meeting with the President to draft agendas and determine needs
  • Assisting with branding-related projects, the creation of marketing materials, and photo editing
  • Serving as a public face for the publication on occasion
  • Attending events on behalf of the organization

Desired Skills:

  • Strong writing and editorial skills
  • Ability to create editorial calendars and enforce deadlines a must
  • Ability to package and tailor content for a diverse group of readers, especially those new to contemporary art
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word for Mac, Google Drive suite, and other standard office procedures and equipment
  • Image editing, design, and website development/management are a major plus
  • Strong network of contacts including artists, writers, curators, and cultural producers preferred
