Anthony Palocci Jr. '09: Seeing Things

If you stare at something long enough it will start to look unfamiliar, alien even. Anthony Palocci Jr. paints ordinary things in such a way that they seem foreign. Whether an object is tightly cropped or viewed at a distance, in the light or masked by a shadow, he just sees things differently. Seeing Things presents a mixed media collection of work connecting the relationships between things if you stop to really look. Read more here.

Magic Without Tricks

Artists, consciously or unconsciously, dabble in magic. They borrow signs and symbols, and plant symbolic language, like seeds, into our hearts and minds to offer us new perceptions, and how this happens is…well, a little like magic. To the searching viewer an art work may yield the secrets of the artist’s craft without losing its "magical" power. Is this what separates real magic from mere trickery? Does the difference matter?

Tuesday September 2 — Tuesday September 30 2014

Sarah Meyers Brent: Living Paint

Sarah’s works explore the viscous ooze at the creation and termination of life. Using globs of dried paint, recycled fabric, paint rags, and decaying flowers, her mixed-media pieces flow out of and accrete to the canvas and walls. In the dialogue between the themes of growth and decay pervading her paintings, sculptures, and collages, Sarah’s works are themselves in a state of flux, as if going in though their own degradation. Sarah believes that "In this age of technology, when we are steps removed from nature it is important for art to allow the viewer to experience what is alive and physical."
